Know the Home Toxins

Tuesday, August 31, 2010  The Environmental Protection Agency reports that the chemicals in many personal care and cleaning items used in the home are three times more likely to cause cancer than outside contaminants. The home environment may be responsible for 90 percent of cancers reported.

1. PFCs: Perfluorinated chemicals are specific chemicals used to create the nonstick coatings on many pans. When left to heat on the stove top with nothing in the pan, the PFCs can melt and be distributed into the air. PFCs can affect fertility in women and disrupt hormones in the body. Highly toxic to pet birds.

2. Cleaning supplies: If the cleaning product contains an extensive warning label or the obvious skull and crossbones symbol for poison it is likely full of noxious chemicals. using all-natual products or even common kitchen staples, such as vinegar and baking soda, to clean is healthier.

3. VOCs: That "new car smell" or the smell of carpeting or paint when one enters a home may signal newness and cleanliness. However, that distinct smell is actually the result of a number of building products off-gassing in the home. Open the windows and bring in plenty of green plants to improve the indoor air.

4. Radon: A colorless and odorless gas, radon is a natural substance that is found in soil and water. Highly prized granite countertops may also emit radon. A homeowner should test whether their home has an unusually high level of radon. You can get simple home test kits in your hardware stores.

Saturday, May 22, 2010  The day started for most at 6am. We all meet at the fire house around 6:30am. We arrived at the Burlington County Fire Academy around 7am excited about the days up coming events. This was the third annual Explorer/Junior Firefighters competition held in Burlington County. This year there were 10 teams from several fire companies participating. They each had 5 scenarios to complete while being judged for teamwork, skill, safety and knowledge. There were judged by a group of Fire Chiefs from all over the state using a point system. All the teams and advisers did an outstanding job. Many new friends were made and alot of respect gained by all. Through a lot of teamwork and dedication our team was able to come in first place again, second year in a row. Congrats to all of them and all the participants in the days events. A special thanks to all the advisers, judges and the ESTC for making the day possible.  Looking forward to next year.
